IT'S NOT JUST YOUR AGE, EITHER
In the typical American, getting older causes changes in hormone balance, body composition, and metabolism. Men tend to gain weight until they reach fifty, and then it levels off. Women, on the other hand, tend to gain weight until they reach age seventy before it levels off. Gaining some weight say, about ten pounds as you age may be inevitable. It may even be healthy, especially in women, because it increases estrogen production and actually improves appearance.
Gaining more than that is not a good idea, but it is common in the Unked States, where we tend to gain about one pound of weight per year, starting at age twenty-five. This computes to twenty-five extra pounds by the time we reach fifty and since the average American also loses bone mass and muscle mass with age, it is actually over thirty pounds of fat. One study found that 64 percent of women and 73 percent of men between fifty and sixty years old were seriously overweight.
However, this kind of weight gain certainly is not inevitable, and age is no excuse to let yourself go. There are many examples of older people who continue to look fantastic and do not lose muscle tone or gain much body fat. And it's not all an illusion thanks to plastic surgery. If you are physically active and watch what you eat, you, too, will lose little if any bone or muscle mass and will be less likely to become overweight.
THERE'S HOPE
So there you have it how yo-yo and crash dieting, a sedentary lifestyle, eating too much junk, and chronic stress all work together to lead to the starvation response, altered body composition, carbohydrate sensitivity, and imbalanced hormones. These, in turn, slow your metabolism. If your metabolism is already impaired, you might despair of ever untangling the mess. If your metabolism is not yet ruined, you might be afraid it will be if you start dieting. Nothing could be further from the truth. Counteracts carbohydrate sensitivity with an emphasis on foods that are low in simple carbohydrates, specific supplements that blunt the glucose- insulin response (and even allow you to cheat occasionally), specific types of exercises that favor body fat loss and preservation (or building) of mus cle, ways to lower stress, and nutritional supplements that support opti mum insulin production and utilization.
- Counteracts hormone imbalance with a way of eating that supplies you with wholesome foods as well as nutritional supplements that stave off pre mature aging and support hormone function, and ways to deal with chronic stress that can knock hormones off-kilter.
